How to update Safari
Safari updates together with your system, so the update is free and comes from the same place as all your other system updates.
On your computer
- Click the Apple menu at the top left of the screen and choose System Settings.
- Click General, then Software Update.
- If an update is offered, click Update Now and follow the prompts.
On iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- If an update is offered, tap Download and Install.
Safari is part of iOS, so updating your iPhone or iPad is how you update Safari. To avoid doing this by hand, turn on Automatic Updates in the same Software Update screen.
Good to know
- Safari comes with macOS, so updating macOS is how you update Safari — there is no separate updater inside Safari.
- On macOS 12 Monterey and earlier, the path is the Apple menu, then System Preferences, then Software Update.
- Apple also ships Safari updates for the last few macOS versions, so you usually get a current Safari without a full macOS upgrade.
- If your Mac cannot install a supported macOS anymore, that is okay — current browsers such as Firefox or Chrome still run on many older Macs and are a fine alternative.
